Letter Policy

Recommendation Letter Policy for Undergraduates

I am willing to write a recommendation letter only for those who have received an A- or above in at least one of my courses. The reason for this is that I can’t praise you unless you performed well. Most of you will be applying to multiple places. To save us both time, I request that you use Berkeley’s letter service, which will forward the recommendation to as many places as you desire.

If you have received an A- or above in at least one of my courses, please send the following materials in hard copy (don’t worry, I recycle) to me at the political science department in 210 Barrows Hall, no later than 1 month (30 days) before the letter is due:

  • A filled-out form from the Career Center letter service with your signature waiving your right to view the letter
  • An addressed and stamped envelope for me to send the letter back to the letter service, with any pertinent deadline written on the front of the envelope
  • A resume
  • A Berkeley transcript (unofficial is fine)
  • A copy of the paper(s) you wrote for my class (if available)
  • A brief note indicating the programs to which you are applying or interested in
  • Any other information you think would be helpful to me
